  • Who Am I?

Yo! My name is Robbie. Join me as I fumble through this blog thing and rattle on about games and stuff that I like!

I don’t feel like there are many gamers out there with my kind of tastes – at least it feels that way most of the time – so I’m starting this page in hopes of finding others out there, who like me, have strange kinda tastes.

This is going to be interesting.

So, if you’ve somehow found yourself here, then I hope you manage to dig A Certain Kind of Gamer.

REMAKE: Alex Kidd in Miracle World – An Interview With The Devs Narehop & Josyanf1

June 19, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

If you’re a SEGA fan and you keep up-to-date with retro-gaming community on social media, then no doubt you’d have seen this indie remake of the SEGA Master System classic Alex Kidd in Miracle World spring up from out of absolutely nowhere.

Alex Kidd in Miracle World was the first foray into the SEGA Universe for many a SEGA kid. It was a pack-in game for SEGA’s revised Master System II model, being built-in to the console. Later versions of the Master System II had Sonic The Hedgehog in there, but the one, true Master System II pack-in will always be Alex Kidd.

E3 2018 Highlights & Games To Play While Waiting: CYBERPUNK 2077 // SONIC TEAM RACING // MONSTER BOY & THE CURSED KINGDOM + MORE

So, E3 2018 is done and dusted. I’ve been soaking in the information the last week, as I’m sure almost every one have done, too.

In all honestly, I haven’t been entirely floored with everything I’ve come across, because I tend to prefer smaller-scale, niche games over the AAA stuff, but of course, there are exceptions! I like my single-player stuff, racing games, and retro-styled experiences, and there were a few things this year that tickled my fancy.

A few games, though, I’m super-excited for. So excited, in fact, that I need games to fill the wait. And I’ll get to those in a bit. But before I do, here are some games coming up on the horizon that really got me pumped:

NEWS, PICK UPS + MORE: Out Run 2019 // FAST BEAT LOOP RACER GT Delayed + Pre-Purchase // Apocryph // Logitech G920 Wheel // Gamer Getaway

Things have been a little quieter this week, but there are reasons, I promise!

Early last week, I crossed a big-ticket, bucket-list item off my ‘want’ list – a Steering Wheel for my PC! I settled on the Logitech G920 Driving Force GT because game compatibility is great, and well, its pretty.

Real pretty!

To say I’ve been happy with my purchase is an understatement. This thing has changed my racing world.

February 14, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

Who doesn’t love some cheap games? They’re a nice way to pad out your library, sure, but a gamble they can definitely be – a cheap RRP isn’t usually synonymous with quality. Well, don’t fret, because I’m here to help! These 5 games I’m about to show you challenge that theory.

Here are 5 Games for the Retro Gamer you can find on Steam that are totally mint, as well as cheap!

Low-Pressure Gaming – SAN FRANCISCO RUSH 2049

January 28, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

Desktop Screenshot 2018.01.28 - 14.21.41.92

Low-Pressure games. Chill-out games. Comfort games.

I’ve never been one for multi-player gaming. I put this squarely down to the fact that, barring the occasional couch co-op session, I don’t have a competitive bone in my body. So that’s out.

So what about JRPGs? Generally, they don’t do it for me either, although I really wish they did. With the odd exception or two, I can never find it within myself to take the stories they have to tell seriously, and my eyes roll at every bit of exposition-heavy dialogue. Scratch that off the list.

So when it comes down to games I play for the sake of playing games, yeah, you definitely won’t see me running to a multi-player FPS, or jumping into a Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy game to while away the hours.

WATER-BASED Arcade Racers – The Notable RANKED From KILLER To TRASH.

January 24, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

Base Profile Screenshot 2018.01.24 - 12.25.27.68

If there’s one racing sub-genre that is sorely under-represented these days, it’s the water-based arcade racer. When done right, it’s all blue-skies, even bluer water and wave-hopping fun. There’s just something about the aesthetics of these games that I love. It’s all in the colours, the undulating clear waters, the music and the ride. A good water racer will offer stunning visuals, great physics and a one-of-a-kind of racing experience that’ll stick with you a long time.

ALTERNATIVE GAMING – What You Play When AAA Gaming Doesn’t Float Your Boat.

January 23, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

shot0004

I think it’s safe to say that I’ve mostly jumped off of the AAA wagon.

Studios like Activision, Ubisoft and EA cater to an entirely different generation of gamers these days… and it’s definitely not something I feel a part of.

Games As A Service is not a concept I can wrap my head around. The vast open worlds, lifeless racing titles and indentikit shooters and MOBA’s lost me, if I’m being truthful, toward the tail end of the Xbox 360 era.

SEGA SATURN: Niche Japanese Imports To OWN / CONSIDER / AVOID.

January 22, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

The SEGA Saturn is my most beloved console, this I’m sure you already know. It had my back against that filthy Sony Playstation – coz schoolyard gaming politics – and I still own my childhood Model 2.

I picked up a second unit many years ago, settling on a nice Japanese Model 1 unit that whilst a bit yellow these days, runs anything I throw at it. And with that purchase, the Japanese library opened up to me like the prettiest flower I’d ever seen.

All of the games that I could only dream about as a youngster were finally within my grasp…

… and I made the most of it.
