  • Who Am I?

Yo! My name is Robbie. Join me as I fumble through this blog thing and rattle on about games and stuff that I like!

I don’t feel like there are many gamers out there with my kind of tastes – at least it feels that way most of the time – so I’m starting this page in hopes of finding others out there, who like me, have strange kinda tastes.

This is going to be interesting.

So, if you’ve somehow found yourself here, then I hope you manage to dig A Certain Kind of Gamer.

E3 2018 Highlights & Games To Play While Waiting: CYBERPUNK 2077 // SONIC TEAM RACING // MONSTER BOY & THE CURSED KINGDOM + MORE

June 17, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

So, E3 2018 is done and dusted. I’ve been soaking in the information the last week, as I’m sure almost every one have done, too.

In all honestly, I haven’t been entirely floored with everything I’ve come across, because I tend to prefer smaller-scale, niche games over the AAA stuff, but of course, there are exceptions! I like my single-player stuff, racing games, and retro-styled experiences, and there were a few things this year that tickled my fancy.

A few games, though, I’m super-excited for. So excited, in fact, that I need games to fill the wait. And I’ll get to those in a bit. But before I do, here are some games coming up on the horizon that really got me pumped:

PERFECT 10s – Ridge Racers/Ridge Racer 2 (PSP).

June 5, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

PERFECT 10s is a series I’m starting that shines a spotlight on Arcade Racing games that are, in my opinion, among the best the genre has to offer. I will not be judging these games in comparison to others in the genre – they come in far too many varieties.

Some of the greats have only a handful of cars and tracks, whilst others are heavier on the content. A flaw or two aside, the games featured in PERFECT 10s are games of astounding quality that you can safely tuck into, knowing you’re in for an absolute treat. Expect some anecdotes, plenty of screenshots and my preferred method of playing these games in 2018.

I’m not the usual retro-gamer. I love, love LOVE my original hardware, and in most cases that’s where I go to play the games in my collection. Some systems though? I’ve gotta be honest – I prefer to emulate them.

The PSP is one such system.

TUTORIAL: Make Game-Specific Executables For MAME/PCSX2 ROMS & Games In Windows 10 // Gorgeous POOTERMAN Icons

I’ll get to the Tutorial in a second, but I’ve really got to go into what inspired this post in the first place.

So, I finally sat down and went through DeviantArt ICON (ha!) POOTERMAN’s gallery. I’ve been meaning to download all of the icons he’s made to replace my own for a while now, and being laid up with a bad back today was the perfect excuse to get cracking and just do it.

NEWS, PICK UPS + MORE: Out Run 2019 // FAST BEAT LOOP RACER GT Delayed + Pre-Purchase // Apocryph // Logitech G920 Wheel // Gamer Getaway

April 24, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

Things have been a little quieter this week, but there are reasons, I promise!

Early last week, I crossed a big-ticket, bucket-list item off my ‘want’ list – a Steering Wheel for my PC! I settled on the Logitech G920 Driving Force GT because game compatibility is great, and well, its pretty.

Real pretty!

To say I’ve been happy with my purchase is an understatement. This thing has changed my racing world.

NOW PLAYING: DiRT Rally (PC) // Gotcha Racing 2nd (SWITCH)

April 10, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

Giving games a second chance can, sometimes, totally pay off.

I can be stubborn and closed-minded when I experience a game for the first time. I imagine what it would be like for a long while, and then when the game inevitably fails to live up to my expectations, I’m done. Out for the count.

But nine times out of ten, I’ll choose to revisit said game. I’ll come back in with low expectations and an open mind. And sometimes, just sometimes, a game that I ignorantly detested so damned hard becomes something else entirely. Where hate once stood, there is now only love.

This happened to me a few days ago, and DiRT Rally is one such game.

I’ve also been hopelessly hooked on Gotcha Racing 2nd on the Switch. Great game, and I’ll tell you all about it reeeeeeal soon!

But first, DiRT Rally.

A new Retro FPS? Is the Saturn Wheel a must-have peripheral for racing fans? And what Nintendo Switch Indie Game made my blood boil this week? READ ON!

I’ve been working all week, so the posts haven’t been coming out as often as I’d like. I’m back to my normal roster as of next week, so yay – MOAR GAMES!

RETRO GAMER LIFE: New SEGA Saturn and Mega Drive Pick Ups!

March 10, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

PicMonkey Image

Just a quick post today – I’ve been pretty busy with work the last few days, and I’ve been doing some volunteer work too, so I haven’t had much time to capture game-play, screenshots or anything else really cool like that.

But I have received a few bits and bobs in the mail. Fyeah… PICK UPS!

I’ve been really into the Saturn lately. I mean, I usually am, but am prone to phases where it’s all I play for weeks on end.

Hence the purchases.

I also got a killer new Mega Drive game to add to my (admittedly humble) collection of games for that system. Let’s get on with it, shall we?

Learning To Love: DAYTONA USA (CHAMPIONSHIP) CIRCUIT EDITION

March 1, 2018 · by akumajobelmont

vlcsnap-2018-03-01-22h27m22s884

Learning To Love is a series that I’m going to start throwing at you every now and then – a series about games that I am giving a second, third or in Daytona USA (C)CE’s case, hundredth chance. These could be games that I wanted to like, but couldn’t latch on to, or games that I hyped up to ridiculous levels as a youngster, that inevitably failed to meet expectation. It could also be games that I’ve never liked that all of a sudden, just work for me. A retro gamer’s life can be strange sometimes.

So let’s go away, shall we?

RETRO GAMER LIFE: My Quest For A Complete SEGA Saturn Racing Collection + Pick-Ups!

Not Pictured – Loose PAL Need For Speed and Virtua Racing.

And now for something a bit different. Something a little more personal, and a tad more ‘bloggy’ – if that is even a thing.

It’s no secret that I really, really love arcade racing games. Even games that were generally regarded as ‘sim’ games in the 32-bit era are far removed enough from reality that I can usually find something to enjoy in all of them. The more reality creeps in, the more bored I become.

But why racing games? Would you believe me if I told you I couldn’t care less about cars in the real world? It’s true – I’m the furthest from a petrol-head as anybody you’re likely to encounter. Ever. Read More →
